I stumbled across this forum while cruising the internet. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.
My great grandmother was named Catherine Ann OVERN, according to her records. Her father was James OVERN and her mother Ann Granger. James and Ann's records state they were from County Down, while Catherine was born in County Fermanagh.
While searching for ANYTHING, we ran across information that told us the name was not originally Overn - that in fact it was more likely either OVEREN, OVERIN, OVEREND, or MACGOVERN.
We cannot seem to find ANY descendants of this family, other than two cousins who recently surfaced. One has the surname Overn, the other has the surname Overen. We have compared records and now know we are all three talking about the same family line.
I can give some information as to when the family came over from Ireland, who married who and even some of the Overn children. But we cannot find anything back in Ireland. In fact, we are usually told we aren't Irish, that we are actually Norwegian or Swedish or Finnish. This has really put a damper on our searching.
My line, in particular is 100% Irish, going back as far as we can go so far. My hope is that someone may recognize some of these names and get hold of me, or at least give me some idea of where to look!
Thank you for your time and any help someone might be able to give. Patty Quinn
